All categorical surgical residents are required to participate in at least one research project that leads to a publication in a peer-reviewed journal and/or a presentation at a regional or national venue. There are numerous opportunities for residents to become involved with faculty clinical research projects on the Jacksonville campus.

Residents interested in basic science research can work with a faculty member to locate opportunities at the UF campus in Gainesville or elsewhere in the country. Those that pursue such opportunities typically take time out of the residency and do so between their second and third years of training for one to two years of focus on basic research and may also pursue an additional research-related degree.

The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville encourages resident/fellow research through the availability of Dean’s Fund research awards and an annual celebration of resident and fellow education and research day.

Annual Research Day

Throughout the year, residents are encouraged to pursue research projects with support and guidance from faculty members. Each year the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville hosts a Research Day that brings all of the college's departments together. Residents and fellows have the opportunity to give an oral presentation and/or a poster presentation on their research projects before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.
