The master rotation schedule consists of 13 block rotations. The box on the right shows an example of a flexible service schedule. The schedule is organized so that each service acts as a building block for the next and it allows time at the beginning of the schedule for fellows to prepare for examination for certification.

Fellows do not take in-house night calls, however this is subject to change upon fellow's request. Attendings are always present in-house.

Three months of electives are reserved at UF Health Jacksonville or affiliated sites, if desired. Fellows can choose from the following, among others:

  • Transplant critical care at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is a 4-week block elective
  • Burn intensive care unit at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville is a 2 or 4-week block elective
  • Trauma at UF Health Jacksonville
  • Emergency surgery service at UF Health Jacksonville

The didactic curriculum parallels that of the pulmonary disease and critical care fellowship and includes lectures, case discussions and journal clubs.

The MCCKAP exam is administered annually each spring to assist fellows in preparation for the Surgical Critical Care Boards and to help critical care program directors to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their fellowship program and program participants. Each fellow is required to complete the exam as a preparation tool for the critical care subspecialty board examination and to identify topic areas that need further study.
