The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is committed to fostering research by the faculty and residents. This institution has been engaged in clinically applied research for many years and is enriched by the presence of faculty who have demonstrated excellence in performing research and in training new investigators.

Our pediatric resident scholarship group gathers on a quarterly basis to facilitate scholarly activity within the residency program and to provide a venue for discussion, collaboration and support of ongoing resident research initiatives and community advocacy initiatives. Research electives are available to both PGY-2 and 3 residents if needed. In addition a basic science research elective is also available to those residents with an interest in bench research.

Research Day 2011A scholarship initiative exists to provide residents the opportunity to participate in longitudinal self-designed, faculty mentored research activities or a community advocacy project. This Initiative provides the residents in the research arm a comprehensive experience in all aspects of formal scholarship activity. This includes:

  • Critical review of medical literature
  • Preparing and delivering of an oral presentation
  • Preparing a poster presentation
  • Preparing a written manuscript and submitting it for publication
  • Submitting an abstract to a regional or national meeting
  • Submitting a grant application
  • Completing a three or four week research elective

A faculty mentor and the pediatric resident scholarship group assist trainees in developing projects, writing case reports and providing guidance on abstract submission, presentations at meetings and manuscript preparation.

Each year the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville hosts Research Day that brings all of the college's departments together. Well-designed studies conducted in collaboration with the faculty have resulted in residents and fellows presenting their research at regional, national and international meetings.

Funding support is made available for these presentations and residents are strongly encouraged to publish the results of their scientific projects.
