Northeast Florida Pediatric Diabetes Center

The Northeast Florida Pediatric Diabetes Center is a joint venture between Wolfson Children's Hospital and Nemours Children's Specialty Care. The Diabetes Center is the only pediatric diabetes center serving Northeast and North Central Florida and Southeast Georgia. A grant from Children's Medical Services of Florida has made staffing the center with key personnel a reality. The center provides the best care to the region's growing number of children diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. While many insurance plans still do not cover critical components of diabetes care such as outpatient education and dietary support, the CMS grant ensures children treated at the center will receive these integral services regardless of insurance limitations or reimbursement.

The diabetes team includes eight physicians from Nemours, two dieticians and four nurses, as well as an administrative assistant and authorization specialist. Both dieticians and three of the nurses are certified diabetes educators. The Center follows nearly 1000 children with diabetes and has a very active insulin pump program (with approximately 45% of children with type 1 diabetes on insulin pumps). Furthermore, we are on the forefront of technology, using continuous glucose monitoring and hybrid closed loop systems. Our pediatric diabetes center brings together inpatient and outpatient components of all aspects of diabetes treatment.

The Center includes a learning resource area in the Hospital complex complete with internet access along with diabetes literature and videos for patients and families. It houses two conference rooms, which can join to form one larger room; a kitchen helpful for teaching meal planning; and state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment. It also includes a teaching area in the outpatient department with two teaching rooms. This program is a vital link to the endocrine division and a pivotal source of education and training for endocrine fellows. The program is also vital to the local diabetes community.
