To provide residents and fellows with strong and diverse clinical, laboratory and research exposure through didactics and service work, preparing them for their future practices in the community practice or academic setting.

Program Aims

The fundamental aims of the pathology residency program are:

• To provide pathology training that emphasizes interpretative, investigative and management skills
• To provide residents the tools to identify and pursue their own career path and foster their professional development
• To provide residents with the necessary managerial and quality improvement skills to run a laboratory
• Set an example of life-long learning and critical thinking
• Educate residents on the critical review of scientific literature and incorporating best practices into clinical care
• Train residents to effectively communicate with and educate colleagues and patients on relevant issues

Goals and Objectives

The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville offers exceptional training in anatomic and clinical pathology through a four-year, ACGME-accredited residency program. The primary goal of the program is to educate residents to become knowledgeable anatomic and clinical pathologists who are self-motivated and competent to pursue either an academic or a private practice career in Pathology. The program has four basic goals:

• Provide the knowledge, technical skills and experience necessary for residents to competently practice anatomic and clinical pathology, this includes developing knowledge of basic pathologic processes and skills needed to interpret laboratory data as well as make clinicopathologic correlations
• Promote effective communication and sharing of expertise with peers and colleagues
• Promote the development of investigative skills to better understand pathologic processes as they apply to both individual patients and the general patient population
• Promote the acquisition of knowledge and provide experience in laboratory direction and management and encourage residents to assume a leadership role in the education of other physicians and allied health professionals

Upon completion of the program the resident will be able to:

• Comprehend the basis of pathologic processes
• Explain pathologic processes that apply to individual patients, as well as to the general patient population
• Analyze laboratory and clinical data
• Interpret laboratory data for clinicopathologic correlation
• Practice the technical and mechanical aspects of laboratory pathology
• Successfully manage a laboratory

The residency emphasizes training built on competency-based educational objectives and dependable educational outcome assessment. Residents play an active role in departmental activities including service, administration and research. Program faculty include administration and medical staff of the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, as well as the State Medical Examiner’s Office, the Blood Alliance, the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Laboratories and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Practical clinical experience is balanced by a wide variety of conferences and didactic activities. Visiting faculty of national reputation present formal lectures and meet more casually with the residents. A core curriculum of weekly conferences, extending over a two-year period, covers all of the basic elements of anatomic and clinical pathology and its subspecialties. Numerous inter- and intra-departmental conferences provide breadth and depth to the residents’ training.
