UF Health welcomes Dr. Jason Piraino as chief of podiatry and podiatric residency director

Jason Piraino, DPM, MS, joined the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville Sept. 9 as an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, chief of the division of foot and ankle and director of the podiatry residency program.

Prior to joining UF, Piraino was an associate professor at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. He specializes in foot and ankle trauma, pediatrics, limb salvage, rear foot reconstruction, minimally invasive surgery, arthroscopy and ankle joint replacement.

"We are delighted to have Jason Piraino join our team at UF Health. Dr. Piraino is a well-respected foot and ankle surgeon with an active research program," said John Kirkpatrick, MD, FACS, UF professor and chair of orthopaedics and rehabilitation.

"He has been deeply involved in resident education in his prior position at Temple University and is well prepared to assume the leadership of our podiatry residency. His excellent care and pleasant personality combine to make him a great addition to our clinical care team," Kirkpatrick said.

Piraino is one of few doctors in the region who offers full ankle replacement surgery, which can be the best option for some patients with ankle pain or swelling or mobility problems caused by the ankle.

In addition to ankle joint replacement, Piraino offers a new technique called tendoscopy, in which the tendons are examined with an arthroscope. He also offers minimally invasive procedures, flat foot reconstruction and other reconstructive surgery for the ankle and foot.

Piraino said he was attracted to the post both because of UF Health’s "high regard" as a medical institution, and because he would be able to continue teaching, which is a passion. He is already setting a series of projects in motion, including the pursuit of cutting-edge equipment and research studies.

"My intention is to make this foot and ankle program one of the best in the country," he said.

Piraino received his medical education at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine and completed Temple’s University Hospital foot and ankle surgical residency, one of only two four-year podiatric surgery residencies in the country. He is board-certified in foot surgery and reconstructive rear foot and ankle surgery.
