Advances in Medical Education 2011

The 2011 Medical Education Week was packed with educational activities including teleconferences, workshops and simulation competitions to recognize and nurture the education programs at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville (UFCOM-J). The event, sponsored by the Office of Educational Affairs, is designed to share and recognize advances and innovations in medical education.

This year's Advances in Medical Education keynote address was delivered by Joseph C. Fantone, M.D., senior associate dean for educational affairs with the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville, Fla.

The simulation competition, known as Simwars, included participation from UFCOM-J residents, along with nurses from Shands Jacksonville. The winning team consisted of Emergency Medicine resident Dustin Brimblecom, M.D., Obstetrics and Gynecology resident Melissa Moore-Hill, M.D. and Surgery resident Ali Al-Rawi, M.D.

The week long series of educational events culminated with the annual Advances in Medical Education exhibit and award ceremony. This year's poster and table exhibit included 23 educational projects conducted by faculty and residents from the UF College of Medicine-Jacksonville, in addition to presentations by Shands Jacksonville pharmacy.

Based upon concept, structure and appearance, awards were presented for the most outstanding poster presentation. One resident/fellow/trainee and one from among the faculty and staff participants were chosen through a peer review process of the abstracts.

This year's recipient of the Most Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award are Department of Pediatrics' Kelly C. Komatz, M.D., M.P.H. and Jose Zayas, D.O., FAAP for their presentation Delivering Pediatric Bad News – Utilization of CSESaR Simulation Lab.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation resident Eric Stiefel, M.D. is the winner of the Most Outstanding Resident Award for lead on the innovative project entitled Health Care Policy – an Opportunity to Improve Systems-Based Practice Education.

Continued participation of students from the Darnell Cookman School of the Medical Arts reinforced the university's growing support of and relationship with the school and its students. This year a total of 18 Darnell-Cookman students presented alongside the faculty, residents and staff at the event. University of Florida College Of Medicine-Jacksonville faculty and staff served as advisors to these students.
