Welcome Dr. Nipa R. Shah, associate professor and chair of community health and family medicine

Nipa R. Shah, M.D. assumed the position of chair of the department of community health and family medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville (UFCOM-J) on February 16, 2011.

Prior to coming to Jacksonville, Shah served as associate professor of clinical family medicine in the department of family medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine.

Shah received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine. She did her family medicine internship at Metro Health, in Cleveland, Ohio and completed her residency in family medicine in 1999 at the University of New Mexico. She is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Shah earned her bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and Mathematics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. In 2006, she participated in a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) Intensive Course in International Health Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine. Shah is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

On coming to UFCOM-J, Dr. Shah said, "Escaping Chicago winters was the initial draw, but after meeting the UFCOM-J faculty and staff, and learning about the exciting academic and clinical environments here, there was no turning back!"

Robert C. Nuss, M.D., professor, associate vice president for health affairs and dean of the regional campus, said "Dr. Shah's extensive experience in educational activities at the medical student and resident level, along with her clinical experience, makes her an ideal candidate to follow in the footsteps of her predecessors and allows us to maintain the momentum already developed."

Shah has received numerous prestigious awards and honors. While at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine she was awarded the UIC Family Medicine Residency Outpatient Teacher of the Year Award and the UIC Family Medicine Residency Teacher of the Year Award. She also received the UIC Faculty in Residence Program Participant Award. During her residency at the University of New Mexico she was the recipient of the Resident Scholars, in addition to the Resident Speaker of the Year Award Program.

Her development of the Global Community Health Track for Residency, involvement as the course director for Global Health Electives for Medical Students, course director for Global Health Electives for Family Medicine Residents and a member of the Global Health Think Tank are indicative of her commitment to global health.

Dr. Shah’s dedication to education is evident by her involvement in many educational committees at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. Until her departure she was a member of the Academy of Excellence in Teaching, chair of the Education Coordinating Committee, director of the Predoctoral Subgroup/Curriculum Committee, and founder and coordinator of the Faculty Balint Group, to name a few.

Dr. Nuss said, "Dr. Shah was selected from a highly qualified pool of applicants after a national search to lead the department of Community Health and Family medicine and we are delighted to have her with us."
