Dr. Jeff Goldhagen receives medical society’s Community Service Award

In recognition of his more than 15 years of advocacy for underserved and disadvantaged children of Northeast Florida, Jeffrey Goldhagen, M.D., M.P.H., has been selected to receive the 2010 Community Service Award from the Duval County Medical Society (DCMS). A professor in the Department of Pediatrics and chief of the Division of Community Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, Goldhagen develops and oversees programs for children who are marginalized by physical conditions and social and environmental determinants, including those who are homeless; terminally and chronically ill; in foster care and in transition from pediatric to adult care. In addition, his volunteer service in support of these programs is significant.

"On behalf of the Department of Pediatrics, I commend Dr. Goldhagen’s volunteer efforts throughout our community and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor," said Thomas T. Chiu, M.D., M.B.A., professor and chair, Department of Pediatrics. "A strong advocate of child equity, he is dedicated to the physical and mental health and well-being of all children, particularly those with special needs."

The DCMS established the award in 1998 to recognize outstanding volunteer efforts of its physicians performed outside of society-sponsored activities. A member of the DCMS Board of Directors, Goldhagen previously served as director of the Duval County Health Department. He is being honored for providing countless hours of his own time as well as his initiative, leadership and vision to create or support critical programs such as We Care, Healthy Start, health programs for foster care and homeless children, Medical-Legal Partnership, and primary care and dental programs for underserved children. "If there was a cheerleader for Pediatrics in Duval County, he would be the one," said Jay W. Millson, DCMS executive vice president. The award will be presented at the society’s annual meeting in the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront on Dec. 1.
