Paul Mongan, MD, a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, has been selected as the department’s new chair. He takes over for Saurin Shah, MD, who had been serving in an interim capacity.

“I am extremely thrilled about the opportunity to lead the department of anesthesiology as we look to strengthen relationships with our surgical, nursing and administrative colleagues throughout our health system,” Mongan said. “We will remain dedicated to our academic and clinical missions, which include expanding the excellent care provided to a broad spectrum of patients in Northeast Florida and beyond.”

Mongan, who has been a UF COMJ faculty member since 2016, previously served as chair of anesthesiology at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, located in the Washington, D.C., area. He served as director of the anesthesiology residency program, as well.

Mongan has also held appointments at the University of Colorado and Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

His research has centered on animal models of hemorrhagic shock, with extensive investigations into the mitochondrial effects of shock and the prevention of cellular decompensation and death with metabolic supplements. Mongan’s research highlighted the role of these supplements in enhancing electron chain transport, as well as the prevention of mitochondrial hydrogen ion gradient collapse.

Mongan earned his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He completed his residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and a research fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland.

“Join me in congratulating Dr. Mongan, a valued faculty member whose extensive and dynamic experience in the field of anesthesiology is highly regarded,” said Leon L. Haley Jr., MD, MHSA, dean of UF COMJ and CEO of UF Health Jacksonville. “Dr. Mongan’s clinical and academic achievements are impressive, as he has led departments in the military, education and nonprofit sectors. He is the perfect fit to guide our department of anesthesiology. As he steps into this position, I want to also thank Dr. Shah for his outstanding service as interim chair.”
