UF Health North opens state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit

Women’s services floor completes new 92-bed hospital

UF Health North officially opened the last phase of its new 92-bed hospital today: an entire floor dedicated to labor and delivery and women’s services.

The 20-bed unit includes 12 state-of-the-art delivery suites with sleeping space for families, large tubs that give mothers-to-be a place to relax, and other comforts to help make the hospital experience positive for women and families.

“Our goal is to serve all patients in North Jacksonville, and this new unit specifically designed for labor and delivery and other women’s services completes that circle of care,” said Russ Armistead, CEO of UF Health Jacksonville.

The hospital consists of five floors, four for patients with all-private rooms. Along with the new labor and delivery and women’s services unit, a 24-bed floor is dedicated to intensive care. Two 24-bed floors are dedicated to general medical services. The first floor is used for administrative services, a chapel, a cafeteria and more.

“This is an incredible new resource for the North Jacksonville community,” said Wayne Marshall, vice president of UF Health North. “I’ve had so many people ask me when this floor would be complete because they know the type of service they’ll get. But it’s not just the facility — the staff here is dedicated to giving patients a positive experience.”

UF Health North’s adjoining medical office building opened in February 2015 and has been a major success, earning five stars in emergency room and outpatient surgery care by Professional Research Consultants, a national health care research group. It includes a full-service 24/7 emergency room, outpatient surgery suites, imaging and other diagnostic services, a midwife-led birth center, four floors of physicians’ offices and much more.

“Our UF physicians are just part of the team that makes UF Health North a destination for patients and families seeking the best, most compassionate care,” said Leon L. Haley Jr., M.D., MHSA, dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. “This new labor and delivery unit will be staffed by the same doctors who practice at UF Health Women’s Specialists – North, providing seamless care for our patients.”
