The Nephrology fellowship program consists of a two-year educational curriculum. Fellows rotate through three inpatient and five outpatient core educational experiences. In addition, all fellows have a minimum of five months of protected research time during the two-year fellowship (see Research).

Inpatient Educational Experiences

Nephrology Consults and Senior Consults

The consult service is an inpatient service staffed by nephrology fellows and a nephrology faculty member providing nephrology consultative services to the institution.

In conjunction with the nephrology attending, nephrology fellows see all new patient consultations, coordinate all acute dialysis runs and when indicated, institute and manage all CRRT treatments.

Fellows perform all renal biopsies when indicated. Senior consults allow the senior fellows to function in a more supervisory capacity when working with first-year fellows and residents. Senior fellows perform work rounds with the junior members of the team and see primarily ICU consults.

Transplant Nephrology

Transplant nephrology is an inpatient service at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. The service is staffed by a nephrology fellow and a transplant nephrologist, providing primary and consultative care to transplant patients. Fellows have one month of this service in their first year of training, as well as one month in their second year. While there, the fellows also participate in the outpatient transplant clinic. In addition, the fellows care for patients with faculty supervision in the Post-Renal Transplant Clinic at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville.
