The resident is exposed to a broad range of surgical experiences. Clinical experience is structured for the acquisition of clinical acumen through graduated responsibility in pre, intra and postoperative patient care. Specialty exposure includes trauma, general surgery, head and neck, vascular, pediatric and surgical oncology, plus much more as seen in our rotations offered.

Additional residents are on elective research rotations. This typically is chosen between the PGY 2 and PGY 3 years.

Conferences: Teaching conferences are categorized as departmental or divisional. Departmental conferences are described below:

  • General Surgery Conference: weekly conference relevant to surgery patient care

  • Grand Rounds: a weekly conference focused on specific issues relevant to general surgery or surgical subspecialties.

  • Basic Science: a weekly lecture series designed to cover the principles of the basic science of human biology on a two-year rotational cycle.

  • Morbidity and Mortality: weekly review of all complications and deaths.

  • Trauma Morbidity and Mortality: multidisciplinary review of care of all trauma patients encountered during previous month.

  • Vascular Conference: weekly case conference

  • Journal Club: monthly review of articles relevant to a specific topic selected by the responsible faculty member and the resident coordinators.
