Experts and specialists in a variety of medical fields will again converge on Amelia Island to discuss current and controversial issues in breast cancer.

The Multidisciplinary Symposium on Breast Disease will be Feb. 9-12 at the Ritz-Carlton. The symposium is a University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville Department of Pathology Continuing Medical Education (CME) event for physicians, accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education.

The keynote speaker for the event is Monica Morrow, M.D., chief of breast service in the department of surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and president-elect of the Society of Surgical Oncology. She will be introduced by Paul G. Okunieff, M.D., director of the University of Florida and Shands Cancer Center in Gainesville.

Morrow will discuss "Local Therapy in the Multidisciplinary Era" in her keynote speech Friday morning.

Shahla Masood, M.D.professor and chair of the pathology department at the University of Florida College of Medicine—Jacksonville, is the director of the 17th annual symposium.

"Breast cancer is not a single disease that can be treated by a single physician. We can all benefit from having multiple disciplines in one place for this scientific discussion," said Masood, editor of The Breast Journal and medical director of the Shands Jacksonville Breast Health Center.

Masood said physicians from across the country and around the world have already registered to attend the meeting, including international experts such as Werner Kaiser, M.D., director of the International Breast MRI Working Group and chairman of radiology at University Hospital in Jena, Germany.

Other speakers and presenters include: Clifford Hudis, M.D., chief of breast cancer medicine service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and president-elect of the American Society of Clinical Oncology; Susan Lester, M.D., Ph.D., a breast pathologist and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, and Lillie Shockney, RN, M.A.S, administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center.

A full list of all 18 speakers is available on the course website.

Abstract winners of The Breast Journal awards will present their research on Feb. 11 and will receive awards of up to $500.

University of Florida faculty who will moderate the sessions include: Natalie Xu, M.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology; Fauzia N. Rana, M.D., an assistant professor in the department of medicine and chief of the division of hematology and medical oncology, and Martha C. Wasserman, M.D., an assistant professor of radiology and chief of the division of women's imaging.
