New chair of surgery happy to return to UF

D. Scott Lind, MD, FACS, is happy about returning to the University of Florida, though on a different campus and assuming a new role. Lind is the new chair of the department of surgery at the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville. He began work here March 1.

Lind comes to Jacksonville from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he served as professor and chair of its department of surgery. From 2005 through 2011, Lind served as Jarrell Distinguished Professor in the department of surgery at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). He was also chief of the section of surgical oncology and surgical director of the adult operating rooms for MCG Health.

Prior to that, Lind was professor of surgery at the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville and chief of surgery at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. He said he’s thrilled about returning to UF and having the chance to now lead efforts on the Jacksonville campus.

“I was at UF in Gainesville for the first 14 years of my career in academic surgery, and I knew then about the great people and efforts in Jacksonville,” Lind said. “During my interviews for this position, I met the strong visionary leadership, along with other key faculty and staff, who helped provide me with a sense of great opportunity here.”

Lind is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Surgical Oncology, Breast Journal, WISE MD Multimedia Project and the Journal of Simulation in Healthcare. He has pursued clinical interests in breast cancer and melanoma and various educational topics, particularly the use of simulation in medical education. He has published more than 140 papers and book chapters and has given more than 70 regional and national presentations.

Lind received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his residency at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Medical College of Virginia.

In his first few weeks at UF COMJ, Lind has been getting acquainted with fellow faculty and other members of the department of surgery, as well as personnel across other departments. He’s also familiarizing himself with hospital staff. He said the commitment to UF Health’s core aims of superb clinical care, research, education and community service is evident.

“My goal is to work together with everyone to make UF Health Jacksonville a local, state and national leader in all these missions,” Lind said. “Working together, we can achieve any goal.”

Lind takes over as department chair for Joseph A. Costa, DO, who had been serving in an interim role for more than two years. Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD, dean of UFCOMJ, thanks Costa for his excellent service while congratulating Lind on the new position.

“The University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is privileged to have Dr. D. Scott Lind as the new chair of the department of surgery,” Wilson said. “We anticipate great departmental accomplishments as he assumes his new role. Please take the opportunity to congratulate Dr. Lind when the occasion arises.”
