UF says goodbye to long time faculty, mentor and friend
Published: Friday, June 26, 2009

It is with great sadness that I announce the June 20, 2009 death of Dr. Sidney Levin. I had the fortunate experience to work with (and for!) him for more than 30 years. Dr. Levin was one of the earliest full-time faculty members of the College of Medicine-Jacksonville. Following his internship, residency and chief residency training at Johns Hopkins in 1963, he served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins until 1968. In 1968 Dr. Levin came to Jacksonville as chief of pediatrics at Duval County Medical Center, the predecessor hospital to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.
He served continuously as chairman of the department of pediatrics until 1989. In addition to serving as chairman of pediatrics, Dr. Levin also served as chief of emergency medicine of University Medical Center from 1979-1981. During the course of his service, Dr. Levin held every major administrative position of the faculty and hospital including president of the medical staff. Dr. Levin retired from the faculty in 1998 with the rank of Emeritus Professor. Following his retirement, he continued to serve as a mentor, advisor, counselor and friend. His smiling personality, wit and enthusiasm will be missed by all who knew him and worked with him.
A memorial service will be held on July 15, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center Auditorium.
