Curriculum
Residents are trained in the company of faculty who have expertise in clinical stroke management, surgical management of stroke and cerebrovascular disorders, vascular surgery, interventional neuroradiology, neurosonology, and neurorehabilitation. Our curriculum provides fellows with individual mentorship and guidance to foster well-trained and proficient clinicians qualified to practice stroke neurology and move into clinical or academic positions.
Clinical Rotations
PGY-5 (Months)
Inpatient Stroke Unit - 6
Neuro-Imaging - 4
Elective - 2
Vascular Neurology Outpatient Care - 1 (1/2 day of the week for 12 months)
Vascular Neurology Emergency Care – Daytime hours, 10 months, Night call 1 day/week for 12 months
Under the guidance of attending faculty during the inpatient rotation, fellows supervise a team of neurology residents, nurses, a pharmacist, and rehabilitation specialists. Care is provided to patients admitted with TIA, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke to the stroke service.
The neuroimaging rotation familiarizes fellows with diagnostic angiography, CT perfusion, and acute MRI imaging of stroke. During this rotation, fellows are exposed to interventional procedures, such as clot retrieval, intra-arterial thrombolysis, intracranial and extracranial arterial stenting. Fellows have the opportunity to assist neurointerventional faculty with some procedures.
During the neurosonology rotation residents are trained to conduct and interpret transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. Residents are also trained to know carotid ultrasonography.
During consult months residents provide consultative services to stroke patients throughout our hospital. This includes consults to our emergency department, i.e. assessing patients for acute interventional therapies. In addition, residents have the opportunity to consult on the inpatient trauma service, and our intensive care unit. Attending supervision is provided by both neurosurgical faculty and stroke faculty.
Conferences
Teaching conferences are incorporated into the curriculum. These conferences complement enhanced learning experiences as provided by fellow clinical service.
- Research conference once per month
- Journal club once per month
- Clinical stroke teaching conference once per month
- Basic cerebrovascular neuroscience once per month
- Interdisciplinary case conference once per month
- Bioethics conference once per quarter
