Inpatient Educational Experiences

Nephrology Consults and Senior Consults

The consult service is an inpatient service staffed by fellows and a faculty attending, providing nephrology consultative services to the institution.

In conjunction with the attending, fellows see all new patient consultations, coordinate all acute dialysis runs and when indicated, institute and manage all CRRT treatments.

Fellows perform all renal biopsies when indicated. Senior consults allow the senior fellows to function in a more supervisory capacity when working with first-year fellows and internal medicine residents. Senior fellows perform work rounds with the junior members of the team and see primarily ICU consults.

Transplant Nephrology

Transplant nephrology is an inpatient service at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. The service is staffed by a fellow and a Mayo Clinic transplant nephrologist, providing primary and consultative care to transplant patients. Fellows attend one block of this service during their first year of training, and one block during their second year. While there, the fellows participate in the outpatient transplant clinic. Additionally, during the ambulatory and research rotations, the fellows care for patients (with faculty supervision) in the Post-Renal Transplant Clinic at UF Health Jacksonville. While on the ambulatory rotation the fellows also attend the UF Health Kidney Transplant – Emerson clinic

Research

To complete the scholarly activity requirement of training, each fellow must complete a clinical research project. Fellows are free to select a suitable topic along with a faculty mentor, or join an ongoing project with one of the division's faculty members. Projects must result in either the publication of an article, book chapter, abstract or case report in a peer-reviewed journal (for instance, peer-reviewed performance improvement or education research, peer-reviewed funding, or peer-reviewed abstracts presented at regional/state/national specialty meetings).

Fellows are encouraged to complete research utilizing the availability of the Dean's Fund Research Grant.
