Research

Resident research opportunities and participation in other meritorious activities are available for motivated trainees. The curriculum includes a 1 month research elective in the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. In exceptional cases, PGY-1 residents may use an elective month for research. Most projects are clinical in origin; however opportunities in basic investigation are also available. Resident participation in case reports, retrospective studies, and prospective clinical trials represent the majority of resident projects. The faculty assist trainees in developing a project or case reports and provide guidance and advice on abstract submission, presentations at meetings and manuscript preparation.

Every spring, a Research Day is held on campus, with residents and fellows from all disciplines presenting their work. Well-designed studies conducted in collaboration with the faculty have resulted in residents and fellows presenting their research at regional, national and international meetings. Funding is made available for these presentations and residents are strongly encouraged to publish the results of their scientific projects.
