Curriculum
The Nephrology Fellowship Program consists of a two-year educational curriculum. There are two fellows per year rotating through three inpatient and five outpatient core educational experiences. In addition, all fellows have a four-month block of protected research time during the two-year fellowship (see Research).

Inpatient educational experiences
Inpatient general nephrology (Neph A)
An inpatient service staffed by a PGY-1 and an upper level resident (PGY-2 or 3), a nephrology fellow, a nephrology faculty member and a discharge planner. Nephrology fellows under supervision of the attending nephrologist make all dialysis decisions, write all acute dialysis orders, place and manage all temporary vascular access, serve as first call for the acute dialysis nurses during the day and respond to and manage all acute dialysis medical issues, and perform all renal biopsies.
Nephrology consults and senior consults
An inpatient service staffed by a nephrology fellow and a nephrology faculty member providing nephrology consultative services to the institution.
In conjunction with the nephrology attending, nephrology fellows see all new patient consultations, coordinate all acute dialysis runs, and when indicated institute and manage all CRRT treatments.
Fellows perform all renal biopsies when indicated. Senior consults allow the senior fellow to function in a more supervisory capacity when working with a first year fellow and residents. Senior fellows perform work rounds with the junior members of the team, as well as see primarily ICU consults.
Inpatient transplant nephrology
An inpatient service staffed by a nephrology fellow and a transplant nephrologist, providing primary and consultative care to transplant patients.
Conferences
- Nephrology clinical conference (weekly). Case presentations by fellows and attended by all faculty and fellows.
- Nephrology fellows’ conference (weekly). A venue for the presentation of core didactics by fellows and faculty, with specific meetings dedicated to basic and clinical sciences in Nephrology.
- Renal pathology conference (monthly). A review of renal biopsies with pathology faculty and attended by all Nephrology faculty and fellows.
- Nephrology fellows’ Journal club (monthly). Fellows review and discuss articles with division faculty and fellows.
- Nephrology research conference (monthly). A meeting to review planned, ongoing and completed research projects and presented by fellows, faculty and outside speakers.
