"I’m proud to be both a current resident of the Emergency Medicine Residency, as well as a recent graduate of the Internal Medicine Residency. Both operate in a procedure rich environment where you see patients of the highest acuity. What I have gained from this is a level of experience with critical illness that is difficult to find elsewhere. I look forward to taking this experience into practice, but I’ll always have respect and gratitude for my mentors and professors here at the University of Florida."

Resources

Office of Educational Affairs
The Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs/Designated Institutional Official (DIO) is responsible for the oversight of graduate medical education on the UFHSCJ campus. The Office of Educational Affairs is a resource for the residents on this campus.

The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC)
GMEC is chaired by the ACGME's Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and is comprised of all core program directors, associate program directors, CEO of Shands Jacksonville and peer-selected residents. The GMEC's mission is to ensure compliance with the accreditation essentials of residencies on this campus, and foster high quality resident education and resident well being.

The Resident Graduate Medical Education Committee (Resident GMEC)
The Committee was created to provide a forum for Residents to meet and discuss work environment and educational issues. The Resident GMEC consists of chief residents from all core programs and peer selected resident representatives from each program.

Resident Call Quarters

The call quarters are conveniently located on the ground floor of the Clinical Center at Shands Jacksonville. There are eight "pods" with three rooms per "pod." There are individual lockers for programs within each "pod." All rooms have two bunk beds (with a phone beside each bed), desk, bookshelves and a bathroom with Corian countertops. All rooms have a network drop for a laptop and a 15 inch LCD TV. In addition, wireless nodes are being installed this year; upper level call rooms also have their own PC and printer. Each "pod" has a separate shower and all call rooms are cleaned daily by environmental services.

There is a lounge area with two new 42-inch plasma screen TVs, a full kitchen with bistro tables, exercise area with extra showers and learning/computing space.

In the computing space, there are five computer stations, each with its own printer and access to the Internet, e-mail, patient information systems and electronic textbooks. There is also a work station that is equipped with fax/scanner/copy machine, a shredder and a printer. Because of the importance of e-films to our programs, an e-film dual monitor viewing station has been installed.

There are two mounted security cameras internal to the quarters, beside the two exit doors for added security and safety. Entrance into the call quarters is restricted to residents and fellows, eligible medical students and authorized personnel.

Educational/Informational Technology

    Internet
The University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville (UFHSCJ) and Shands Jacksonville collaborate to maintain a formal, cohesive identity on the Web. ResNet is an area of the UFHSCJ Web site that provides information and convenient access to many resources relevant to University of Florida Jacksonville residents and fellows. For example, ResNet contains a confidential resident duty hour hotline that enables residents to report duty hour concerns in a secure and confidential environment. Residents and fellows can find convenient links, the latest news, schedule of events and communications from the Office of Educational Affairs on ResNet, in addition to such items as the ACGME General Competencies and a link to the current resident manual.

    Distance Learning
The UFHSCJ has several videoconference sites for classes, meetings and other presentations. These include the Alumni Auditorium, classroom 4003, the Deal Boardroom and the Borland Library conference room. Videoconferencing at the UF College of Medicine Jacksonville is routed through a video bridge at the UF Health Science Center in Gainesville.

    Medical Library
Educational resources are many and varied on our campus. Most medical departments maintain their own libraries. The designated central medical library is the Borland Health Sciences Library (BHSL), a division of the UF Health Science Center Library (HSCL). Borland Library's homepage, has links to many electronic resources, including electronic journals, Pub Med and Up To Date, as well as information about the Library's services and collections.

The Office of Educational Affairs in collaboration with the Borland Library established a "Virtual Library", consisting of eight computer workstations and an instructor station. The Borland Library staff conduct courses covering a variety of electronic resources, including PubMed, Loansome Doc, HC databases and others.
