Research
Research experience is an essential part of the training of subspecialists. The ACGME program accreditation requirements for research in pediatric subspecialties must be met.
"Within the institution, the subspecialty trainee must be exposed to, and take part in, research projects that are conducive to a questioning attitude, to protocol development and to critical analysis of new therapies and of medical literature. Research experience should begin in the first year and continue for the entire period of training in order to allow adequate time for the development of research skills and to bring a project to completion. The trainees must help design, conduct, evaluate and prepare for publication or a clinical laboratory research project in the subspecialty area. They will also be required to conduct research seminars and prepare a written report of their research activities. Instruction in related basic sciences and associated disciplines, such as research design, biostatistics and epidemiology must be offered through courses, workshops and seminars."

To comply with the research requirements for certification by the ABP each fellow must perform an independent research project under the supervision of a faculty member(s). Fellows are required to attend the fellowship research seminar, emergency medicine and pediatric department journal clubs. In addition, fellows' research projects are reviewed during the monthly emergency medicine outcome research committee and pediatric emergency medicine fellows' research review committee semi-annual meetings. Protected research time is available during most clinical rotations in the PED. Fellows are free to select a topic of interest within the available resources of the emergency medicine department and pediatric emergency medicine divisions at both UF in Jacksonville and Baptist. Fellows may carry out more than one independent project.
