The University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville (UFCOM-J) is proud to have one of only three ACGME approved Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowships in the state of Florida. Our program offers outstanding training in the clinical practice of pediatric emergency medicine, research, administration and teaching. Typically, the six approved fellowship positions are filled by a mix of pediatric and emergency medicine trained physicians.

Our faculty are highly qualified and participate in teaching emergency medicine residents and pediatric residents, as well as pediatric emergency medicine fellows. The program is involved in the UFCOM-J Simulation Education and Safety Research, toxicology, trauma, research and a close, interactive relationship with a large emergency medicine residency program. Other areas of specialized experience include the Florida Regional Poison Control Center and the Children’s Crisis Center for abused children.

The fellowship program is primarily based at Shands Jacksonville, a major urban teaching hospital for the University of Florida. There is also well established partnership with Baptist Medical Center and Wolfson Children's Hospital. Fellows spend time in the emergency department and other locales (PICU, electives) at Wolfson Children’s Hospital during the fellowship. Shands Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital serve as the only resources for pediatric emergency healthcare for a large indigent population as well as tertiary referral centers for Northeast Florida and South Georgia.

The Emergency Department at Shands Jacksonville is a high-volume, high-acuity emergency department with the only level I trauma designation in Northeast Florida. This includes over 20,000 annual visits for children age 21 years or less. Within the ED, there is an 11-bed Pediatric Emergency Center with a separate triage, waiting room and nursing staff. Shands Jacksonville is a major referral center for Pediatric Trauma.

We enjoy a close working relationship with both Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. The Department of Emergency Medicine sponsors one of the oldest and largest ACGME accredited residencies in Emergency Medicine. The Department of Pediatrics sponsors an ACGME accredited residency, with 33 residents. Pediatrics is part of a citywide network, which includes Nemours Children’s Clinic - Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, in addition to the UFCOM-J. A full array of subspecialists is available for consultation.

The UFCOM-J Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty are accomplished academic physicians. Please click on the following link to review the training and academic backgrounds http://www.hscj.ufl.edu/em/faculty.asp. The teaching staff at Wolfson Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department consists of an excellent group of six full-time PEM board certified or board eligible physicians.

We believe our fellowship program offers outstanding training in the clinical practice of pediatric emergency medicine, research, administration and teaching. We encourage you to explore our web site further and to contact us if you have any questions.
