Welcome from the Program Director

Todd Wylie, M.D.
The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville is proud to have the only ACGME approved Emergency Medicine based Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship in the state of Florida. Our program offers outstanding training in the clinical practice of pediatric emergency medicine, research, administration and teaching. Typically, the six approved fellowship positions are filled by a mix of pediatric and emergency medicine trained physicians. This enriches the training experiences for the fellows.
Our faculty are highly qualified and teach both emergency medicine residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows. The program is involved in the UF Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research, toxicology, trauma, research and a close, interactive relationship with a large emergency medicine residency program. Other areas of specialized experience include the Florida Regional Poison Control Center and the Children’s Crisis Center for abused children.
The fellowship program is primarily based at Shands Jacksonville, a major urban teaching hospital for the University of Florida. The fellowship is jointly sponsored by Baptist Medical Center and Wolfson Children's Hospital and significant time is spent at the Children’s Hospital during the fellowship. Shands Jacksonville and the Children’s hospital serve as the only resources for a large indigent population as well as tertiary referral centers for Northeast Florida and South Georgia. The Emergency Department at Shands Jacksonville has an annual volume of approximately 100,000 patients. This includes 27,000 visits/year for children age 17 years or less. Within the ED, there is a 10-bed Pediatric Emergency Center with a separate triage, waiting room and nursing staff. Shands Jacksonville has the only Level I Trauma Center in Northeast Florida and is a major referral center for Pediatric Trauma.
We enjoy a close working relationship with Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. The Department of Emergency Medicine sponsors an ACGME approved residency in Emergency Medicine, with 48 residents. It is one of the oldest EM residencies in the US. The Department of Pediatrics sponsors an ACGME approved residency, with 35 residents. Pediatrics is a part of a citywide network, which includes Nemours Children’s Clinic, University of Florida, and Wolfson Children’s Hospital/Baptist Medical Center. A full array of subspecialists is available for consultation.
The University of Florida Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Faculty are accomplished academic physicians. Please click on the following link to review the training and academic backgrounds http://www.hscj.ufl.edu/em/faculty.asp. The teaching staff at Wolfson Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department consists of six full-time PEM board certified physicians.
We believe our fellowship program offers outstanding training in the clinical practice of pediatric emergency medicine, research, administration and teaching. We encourage you to explore our web site further and to contact us if you have any questions.
