Patient Care
The UF Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides clinical services at Shands Jacksonville. The Pediatric Emergency Department encompasses 3,500 square feet divided into eight exam rooms and three resuscitation areas, as well as a separate waiting room and triage area. The PED entrance has a seascape design that continues through the entire department. These brightly painted walls provide a non-threatening and entertaining environment for children and their caretakers. The Children's Miracle Network in Jacksonville provided the funding for the décor, as well as funding for pediatric-specialized equipment.
Recently, the PED underwent a "Disney makeover," with each of the examination rooms decorated to represent a different Disney character. In addition, the waiting area and the examination rooms have a television and a VCR playing children's favorite movies. These features alleviate some of the anxiety and fear about the emergency department visit.
The department works closely with many other organizations in order to provide the most extensive care for our young patients. These include:
- Florida Poison Information Center
- Jacksonville Fire Rescue
- TraumaOne
- Trauma Prevention Program
- Injury Free Coalition for Kids
- Shands Jacksonville Pediatric Trauma Referral Center
- Wolfson Children's Hospital
- Children's Miracle Network
- Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services
