Curriculum
Our training philosophy is based on the clinical and academic uniqueness and demanding nature of emergency medicine. Trainees in this field must develop a vast knowledge base encompassing both primary and critical care management. They must also become experts in emergency management and patient care. Our program provides an outstanding fast paced environment in which residents can build knowledge while being exposed to an endless array of patient conditions. A primary component of the residency is experience because emergency medicine is best learned in the emergency department. Another important aspect of our program is to provide the didactic base to further increase knowledge while fostering research interests. The program has uniquely combined the didactic lecture series and small group sessions with high-fidelity simulations to provide an exciting and innovative approach to learning.
During the PGY-1 year, the resident's primary role is to learn the basics of critical care and general patient management. Supervised evaluation and management of patients is emphasized on the wards, critical care units and in the pediatric and adult emergency departments. Procedural skills are refined through a program of intensive training both in the clinical area and in the animal lab.
The PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents further their training with an emphasis on emergency department and critical care rotations. In addition, the residents are taught to supervise rotating students and other house staff, as well as manage the multiple treatment areas. The senior resident also bears primary responsibility for medical, trauma and pediatric resuscitations.
Our emergency medicine residents not only learn the science of Emergency Medicine but also the spirit of independent practice and emergency department management.
