University of Florida Family Medicine Residency Training Program

Research

The goals of the UF Family Medicine Residency Program's research curriculum are to:

  • Conduct studies examining mechanisms to maintain and improve health and health processes
  • Promote primary and secondary prevention in family medicine and surrounding communities
  • Apply knowledge gained from ongoing research and literature to family medicine

In order to complete the family medicine residency program, all residents are required to conduct an independent research project under the supervision and guidance of a department faculty mentor. Residents will present their completed projects at our campus' annual Research Day. Although research time is set aside in the PGY 3 rotation for the required research element, all residents can be paired with faculty members to pursue their research interests. There are numerous opportunities for residents to participate in faculty research projects occurring within our department.

Our program also ascribes to the AAFP guidelines for residency programs and family physicians, which states that all residents should:

  • Understand the importance of scholarly work
  • Appreciate and understand the role of research in clinical care
  • Have the desire to critically evaluate clinical care as evidence-based

After residency completion, family physicians should be able to:

  • Understand research designs
  • Evaluate components of a research article
  • Conduct independent research and publish scholarly works, as well as present scientific works
