Projects & Initiatives

The Center for Health Equity and Quality Research (CHEQR) brought together research teams to collaborate on many activities during 2010-2011 academic year. CHEQR is currently involved in a number of projects for 2011-2012:

Current Projects 2011-2012

Emergency Medicine
Title:Community Improvement and Tracking of Cardiac Events and Outcomes
Research Lead:Joseph Sabato, Jr., MD
Co-Investigators:Davd L. Wood, MD,Ryan Butterfield, Thomas Bryant (DCHD), Robert Harmon, MD (DCHD)
Goal/CHEQR Support:To improve disparities around cardiac events (CE) in the community. CHEQR will assist in getting NE FL hospitals and EMT data into a CDC based registry through MOUs and with DCHD support. Geo-spacial tracking will be implemented over time to assess the outcomes of community based education initiatives.

Internal Medicine/Cardiology/CHEQR
Title: Healthy Eating and Living Spiritually (HEALS)
Research Lead:Sunita Dodani, MD, PhD
Goal/CHEQR Support:To test the effect of a novel faith–based socio-culturally tailored, multi-level, hypertension control and prevention intervention called Healthy Eating And Living Spiritually (HEALS) in African American churches in the Southern part of the US. The team is using a community-based participatory research approach in collaboration with the Health Disparities Community Advisory Board from the UFHSCJ, church pastors, church-based health ministry groups, academic investigators, and external consultants to develop and test this intervention in one church.
Title:Children’s Healthy Habits Integrated for Life (CHHIL): A Faith-based Healthy Lifestyle Program for Childhood Obesity Control through African Americans Churches
Research Lead:Sunita Dodani, MD, PhD
Goal/CHEQR Support:Long-term goal is to reduce obesity & type 2 diabetes (T2D) in African American (AA) children. The immediate goal is to reduce diabetes risk factors by promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyles. This Aetna Foundation grant for regional funding is an attempt to present a faith-based diabetes prevention lifestyle program for high risk children with their families, tests its feasibility in AA children and results will be used as springboard for an NIH R18 trial.

Psychiatry/CHEQR
Title:Feasibility of Video Conferencing in Collaborative Care for Children’s Mental Health
Research Lead:Sean Lynch, PhD
Goal/CHEQR Support:To examine the feasibility of using video conferencing in a collaborative care model (CCM) by analyzing the mental health services and clinical outcomes of the children who receive services through this model compared with usual care (referral only). The proposed research will use a mixed methods design to study the extent to which a floating health utility team - a type of CCM that supports primary care practices within a specified geographic area - could deliver children’s mental health services to off-site primary care settings in northern Florida via video conferencing.
